What is a GEO Score? How to Measure AI Visibility
Your GEO Score tells you how visible your business is to AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — and exactly what to fix to improve it.
What is a GEO Score?
A GEO Score is a composite metric that measures how well your website is positioned to be cited by AI-powered search engines. It evaluates the technical, structural, and authority signals that AI engines use to select sources for their synthesized answers.
SEOh! developed the GEO Score as a practical tool for quantifying AI visibility — turning an abstract concept ('do AI engines cite my business?') into a measurable, trackable number with clear action items for improvement.
What a GEO Score Measures
The GEO Score is composed of five weighted dimensions: (1) Schema Coverage — do you have FAQPage, Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, and HowTo schema where relevant? (2) Answer Structure — are your pages written in answer-first format with clear question-based headings? (3) E-E-A-T Signals — do your pages demonstrate expertise, cite sources, include credentials, and show real-world authority? (4) Entity Prominence — how well-established is your brand entity across the web (external mentions, directory presence, consistent NAP)? (5) Citation Density — how many of your pages are already being cited by AI engines versus competitors?
Why Measuring GEO Matters
Without a measurement framework, GEO optimization is guesswork. You might rewrite a page, add some schema, and have no way to know if it improved your AI citation rate or not.
The GEO Score provides a baseline and tracks improvement over time. When we run a GEO audit for a new client, we typically find that they score high on some dimensions (often content quality and E-E-A-T) and very low on others (almost always schema markup and entity prominence). Knowing the gaps tells us exactly where to focus first for maximum impact.
How to Improve Your GEO Score
The highest-impact improvements, in order: (1) Add FAQPage schema to your 10 most important pages — this alone typically increases Google AI Overview citation rates by 30-60% in our client data. (2) Rewrite intro paragraphs to be answer-first — move the direct answer to the first sentence. (3) Add Organization and LocalBusiness schema to your site-wide layout. (4) Build or update 20+ directory citations with consistent NAP. (5) Add author information with credentials to key content pages. (6) Create comprehensive topic clusters that cover your core services from every angle.

GEO Score in SEOh! Client Work
Every new SEOh! client starts with a GEO Score baseline. We run the full analysis, identify the top 3-5 highest-impact improvements, implement them in the first month, and re-score monthly to track improvement.
Typical client trajectories: most businesses start with GEO Scores in the 25-40 range. After 90 days of optimization, they're typically in the 65-80 range — the range where consistent AI citations begin to compound.

What is a good GEO Score?
GEO Scores range from 0 to 100. Scores below 40 indicate significant gaps in AI visibility fundamentals. Scores of 40-65 indicate a partial foundation with specific missing elements. Scores above 65 indicate strong AI visibility positioning. Our highest-performing clients score in the 75-90 range. Most businesses we audit start between 20-45.
Is the GEO Score the same as a Domain Authority score?
No. Domain Authority (DA) is a third-party metric measuring backlink profile strength for traditional SEO. The GEO Score measures AI-specific signals: schema markup, content structure, answer formatting, and entity prominence. A site can have high DA and low GEO Score, or vice versa. Both matter — but for different channels.
How often should I check my GEO Score?
Monthly is sufficient for most businesses. GEO scores change when you implement new schema, publish new content, or build new citations — all of which take a few weeks to propagate. Checking weekly is unnecessary; checking quarterly may mean you're too slow to catch issues.
Is the GEO analysis tool at analysis.seoh.ca free?
Yes. The GEO analysis and the broader SEO audit tool at analysis.seoh.ca are free to use. You can analyze any URL and receive a full breakdown of SEO and GEO signals without creating an account or entering a credit card.
Does a higher GEO Score guarantee AI citations?
No tool can guarantee AI citations — AI engine citation patterns shift as they update their models. However, a higher GEO Score strongly correlates with higher citation frequency in our client data. The score measures the signals that AI engines use to evaluate sources — improving those signals improves your citation odds.
